Ever since the first towns, squares have been among the most important urban elements. They are a kind of urban living room, empty spaces as antipodes of urban construction characterized by large density. All this was true until automobiles were invented. Suddenly, squares turned into parking lots for steel boxes, and so lost their former significance. In the last few decades we have rediscovered the importance of squares as urban elements.
