It is somewhat unusual that Rijeka, a city fundamentally marked by traffic flows and transit, still does not have a suitable central bus station to this day. It is true that most of the traffic that passed through the city was freight related, yet passenger traffic was not negligible either. In fact, there were several shipping lines connecting Rijeka with the Kvarner islands, and Rijeka was also the starting (that is, final) port of coastal routes operated by Jadrolinija ferry company on their large and elegant ships from today's non-existent white fleet. Even today, transit traffic is important because liners were replaced by popular and fast catamarans. Also, with the development of the highway network in Croatia, bus traffic is experiencing a kind of renaissance, and it is the Rijeka-based company Autotrans, recently acquired by Arriva, a British-German consortium and subsidiary of the powerful Deutsche Bahn, that is the leader in bus transport in Croatia. Despite all these facts, the case of the existing bus station in Rijeka is a bizarre one.
