22/01/2016
The festival will be opened in the fifteenth year of its existence once again on Thursday. For two and half days, it will offer an ambitious talks programme addressing a wide spectrum of topics.
The keynote talk by the architect Max Rieder (Salzburg/Vienna) on Friday is the official opener of the festival. The keynote speaker will address burning issues in today’s construction practice using as reference his interdisciplinary work, in which he combines both practice and theoretical reflexion with various thematic areas.
Just as in the previous year, a dense programme of talks held between Thursday and Saturday puts a focus on central issues of contemporary architecture development. The programme line TURN ON PARTNER focuses on the interface between economy and architecture and addresses specific aspects and developments within construction. Continuing its tradition, TURN ON presents the most ambitious buildings in and from Austria and puts a spotlight on most significant national and international architecture. In 2016, the special guests of the Saturday’s programme come from Barcelona and Dublin.
TURN ON PARTNER – The Dialogues
Thursday, 3rd March and Friday, 4th March 2016
TURN ON PARTNER is a Think-Tank which explores the many aspects of contemporary complex construction. The construction process is evolving more and more nowadays while at the same time the interface between economy and architecture is gaining more importance. During the talks the participants discuss and present many different topics concerning the interaction of various disciplines and points of view.
It’s a platform which puts a spotlight on the multitude of requirements for construction and its backgrounds. Here renowned national and international companies are given the opportunity to present ambitious topics and innovative developments. To round up the programme line, the invited architects present their own views on the respective topics and provide advanced examples for reference.
TURN ON PARTNER facilitates and encourages the creative interactive processes between different sectors. The festival visitors can expect high quality dialogues held between leading company representatives and selected currently well-established architects.

- Wood and steel construction: features various themes and directions in contemporary wood constructing and the potentials of advanced steel constructions
- Innovative developments of brick and ceramic tiles as well as the latest façade constructions and aluminium surfaces.
- A wide variety of construction topics – features the new idea of a hotel, the potential new role of the bathroom in residential building, detailed technical solutions or the important issue of BIM, lighting design and „urban space“.
TURN ON – the buildings
Saturday, 5th March 2016
Leading Austrian architects present specifically selected buildings, the highlights of latest developments in Austria’s architecture today. The talks illustrate various design approaches in Austria and present a heterogeneous spectrum of construction challenges. The special guests are renowned European offices from Barcelona and Dublin.
The topic section “Housing” will present the advanced reinterpretation of a “Bregenzerwälderhaus” in Vorarlberg. The talks on subsidised housing in Vienna will focus on three main topics: new typologies of housing, the on point composition with volumes that served as a basis for the urban villas in Seestadt Aspern as well as the sharp designs for a vacant lot and a big land plot exposed to heavy traffic across the Danube. The Spanish architecture studio R+B pursues the idea of “collective space” in its social housing designs. The final talk will present buildings with two-storey room zones for housing in Vorarlberg.
The talks’ thematic range after the panel of discussions is quite divergent and shows a wide spectrum of construction projects and different design approaches.
Just as in 2015, infrastructure is one of the key topics – showcasing selected supermarkets and an energy supply control centre. The cultural topics range from a concert hall, a private museum up to exhibition arrangements created in an interdisciplinary environment.
A leading architecture studio based in Vienna and an internationally operating architecture office from Dublin will present two big administration and education complexes. In both cases, “public space” - free space in many different configurations – plays a key role.
Development aid projects with a specific claim on architectural and social impact are currently being realized in China and Zimbabwe. The ambitious task to combine content together with form is also the central idea of a new School of Arts and Architecture in Innsbruck.

TURN ON TALK
The importance of buildings – the mediation of architecture
TURN ON showcases selected contemporary buildings. A brand new example is the bilding School of Arts and Architecture where mediation of architecture is an inherent part of the school’s programme and is given an actual advanced architectural form. But what exactly is the meaning and purpose of today’s public presentations and talks? What can be the goal of architecture mediation in general?
Contemporary architecture becomes more and more the focus of public attention. Rudolf Scholten, one of the political co-founders of the Austria-wide architecture mediation, establishes a correlation between a society’s success in art and science and its success in economy and politics. That kind of approach also needs as a basis mediation of cultural topics.
TURN ON TALK poses the following questions to debate: What is the role of architecture today? What can be the purpose of architecture?
It’s undisputable however that in order to fully experience architecture, education is key – and so is mediation.
The panel discussion will take place between the two talk sections. The hot topic will be discussed by:
- Eva Guttmann former director of Haus der Architektur in Graz
- Wolfgang Kos cultural historian, former director of the Wien Museum, Vienna
- Michael Pech board member of the ÖSW – Österreichisches Siedlungswerk, Vienna
