Lecture and Discussion on Catalan Architecture

On Friday, 20 November at 7 p.m., in the Oris House of Architecture a lecture and a discussion about Catalan architecture will be held with guest speakers joining us via video link from the Barcelona Architecture Center.

Lovorka Prpić will deliver a lecture about the work of the architecture studio RCR Arquitectes. After the lecture, our guest speakers – Roldán Berengue, HARQUITECTES, Jaume Prat and Eva Cotman will be joining the conversation from Barcelona.

Miguel Roldán, an architect and educator, is the founding Director of the Barcelona Architecture Center, an educational organization which imparts study abroad programs in architecture and urbanism.  Mercè Berengué, an architect and urbanist, is a representative of Barcelona in the Agrupació d’Arquitectes Urbanistes de Catalunya and a deputy member of the Technical Communication Commission for Regional Planning in Barcelona. Together, in 1988, they established the firm Roldán+Berengué, arqts. The firm specializes in public projects, housing, urbanism and interior projects. The work of R+B has been highly awarded and is regularly published nationally and internationally in top architecture magazines.

Architects Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta began their own studio RCR arquitectes in 1987 in Olot. They achieved the National Award in Architecture in Catalonia in 2005; are Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic since 2008; Honorary Fellows of the American Institute of Architecture (aia) since 2010; and most recently won the International Award Belgian Building Awards in 2011. Since 1989 they have been architectural consultants to the Natural Park of National Interest, in the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa. During their careers they have tutored in Urbanism (1989–2001, Vilalta) and Studio Projects (1992–2004, Pigem). Have won various international competitions (the most recent, the Waalsekrook Mediatec in Belgium, Soulages Museum in France, crematorium of Hofheide in Belgium and The Edge Business Bay in Dubai). Have received various prizes for their work (most notably in the European Union Mies Van der Rohe awards they were twice finalists). Several of their works have been exhibited at galleries such as Toto Gallery.Ma (Global Ends). Furthermore their works have been published in noteworthy architectural journals such as AV no. 137, El Croquis no. 138 (V), RCR Arquitectes 2003-2007 Los atributos de la naturaleza, RCR by 3C Design, Korea.

HARQUITECTES are an architecture studio established in 2000 and based in Sabadell, Barcelona. It is managed by four partner architects: David Lorente Ibáñez (Granollers, 1972), Josep Ricart Ulldemolins (Cerdanyola del Vallès, 1973), Xavier Ros Majó (Sabadell, 1972) and Roger Tudó Galí (Terrassa, 1973). All of them graduated between 1998 and 2000 from ETSA. Vallès, where Josep and Roger teaches Projects and Construction subjects. Xavier also teaches Projects from etsa Barcelona. They have been invited as lecturers around Europe and America and their works have been recognized with several awards and also selected for local and abroad exhibitions.

Jaume Prat graduated from Barcelona School of Architecture (etsab) in 2002. Works in the studios of Josep Lluís Mateo, Enric Massip and Lluís Comerón, and associates with many architects, continually with Montserrat Farres. As associate editor and editor of the Scalae e-book, works on all electronic volumes of the collection, including the one dedicated to rcr Architects. Ortells writes for various publications in Spain and abroad, and is co-author of the Digital Architectural Guide to Barcelona by the Architects’ Association of Catalonia (coac) and the City of Barcelona. Ortells holds lectures and workshops in Barcelona, Granada, Seville and Madrid, and is documenting for the Scalae on the rcr-lab.A Workshop organized in 2013.

Eva Cotman graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the University in Zagreb in 2007. Received the Chancellor’s Award. Since 2008 worked with architectural office vora arquitectura from Barcelona, later worked independently. Author of numerous awarded architectural competition projects and studies. Active member of AJAC, the Young Architects Association of Catalonia. Participates in the organization of their international symposium Initiating projects. Currently, works as an architect, and attends a postgraduate programme at the UPC, Polytechnic University of Barcelona.

Lovorka Prpić graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb. Pursued her post-graduation studies at the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana, where she further stayed for her doctorate dissertation. Since 2002, she has run an architectural bureau with Miljenko Bernfest. Since 2008 obtained the position of senior lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb. Since 2005, she has been a member of Croatian Freelance Artists’ Association. From 2006 to 2008, she was a member of editorial board of magazine ČiP. Won the 1st prize at 25th Young Artists’ Exhibition 1998. With Miljenko Bernfest, she was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2007 (for Centre for Social Care, Sisak) and for Bernardo Bernardi Award in 2002 (Salon La Coulisse, Zagreb).
