Ljubljana has always lived near water and with it. In the Middle Ages, the two banks of the river Ljubljanica were connected by a single wooden bridge which was eventually replaced by a stone bridge while construction of other bridges followed. Two of these were special. In the middle of the 19th century, Hradecky Bridge was built. Later on Plečnik gave it a new location near the hospital.
