The Hotel Maestral was built in Brela, Croatia, in 1965. Lately, an issue has been raised about the construction of an addition to the hotel’s Marina annex built in 1964. The hotel complex includes another annex, Mirna, (built in 1967) and a beach bar built in 1975. From the outset, the extraordinary quality and architectural sensitivity of the hotel building, the exquisiteness of the hotel furniture and the careful positioning of the complex in the landscape have inspired a sense of cultural value, not only in the hotel guests and staff, but also among fellow architects. Over the last three years, the recognised Dutch architects Willem Jan Neutelings and Kess Christiannse and architects from the Architecten Cie office visited Brela at the invitation of Tatjana and Branimir Medić and they all agreed that this architecture practically had no match in international hotel architecture - much to their surprise. This year’s reckless intervention into one of the annexes clearly showed how easy it is to ruin the first-rate architecture of not so distant times, and with it, the experience of dwelling.
