The City of Vienna responds to the challenges of globalization and migrations by developing a residential programme with a unique infrastructure, in terms of its quantity and quality. The centers of the residential programme are the completely new Seestadt city neighborhood in the east and the centrally positioned area of the former station in the south. The common characteristics of the projects are social principles, active ground floor area in synergy with the shaping of public space, the concept of traffic that excludes movement and parking of cars above the ground level, urban density, mixture of functions, inclusion of educational and health institutions. All these measures should provide the residents with the sense of community, shared free time, but also with educational and economic possibilities like organizing small businesses.
