TOO MUCH IS JUST RIGHT: CONSTRUCTING (MODERN) ARCHITECTURE
The lecture is structured around the following formulation: Too Much is Just Right. For this formulation tells us something crucial about architecture, which can be summarised in two points.
Firstly, it signifies a certain approach to design, one characterised by doing too much (in terms of detailing, materials, elements) in order – hopefully, as there is always an element of risk involved – to turn this ‘too much’ into ‘just right.’ Just right in the sense that, as a result of this procedure, an architectural object is produced – and not simply a (decorated) utilitarian object. The lecture will show that Aino and Alvar Aalto developed this method to great effect, in particular in their Villa Mairea project of the late 1930s; and which they constructed as an architectural object.
Which brings us to my second point: the formula "too much is just right" encapsulates the very logical structure of an architectural object as such – of every architectural object in fact. Such an object is characterised by a certain 'too much’, which constitutes this object as 'just right' – as an architectural object, the appearance of architecture in the world.
